Annex is an accessory for the dining table that transforms it into a hub for social interaction in the home. It defines an infrastructure that allows multiple users to eat, work, and play together at the same place and time.
Project Brief
As families, our home-based relationships have become increasingly dislocated; we watch our own TV’s and computers in our own ‘spaces’ and we rely on email/text communication and social networking sites as the threads of living “together-separately”. Design a tool, appliance or furniture item for the kitchen that improves social interaction between family members.
Concept
Annex facilitates flexible and efficient use of the often underused dining table. Users are free to define and share areas which support the activities of their individual lifestyles. By creating a versatile environment in which many users can participate with each other, annex encourages communication and interaction between members of the home.
Rearranging the components into different configurations allow for various activities as shown above. Family members can come together for a similar activity or share the space for different activities but remain within range to freely communicate and socialize:
